Latvian Foreign Ministry Statement on the installation of new demarcation signposts along the administrative boundary line of Georgia’s breakaway region of South Ossetia

The Foreign ministry states its concern about the shifting of demarcation signposts along the administrative boundary line of the breakaway region of south Ossetia on 10 July 2015. Such actions are provocative, they have  a negative impact on the security situation in the region, they cause increases in distrust, they make conflict resolution more difficult, and they reduce the ability of people living in the area to move around freely.

The Foreign Ministry considers that all sides should refrain from any provocative actions and calls upon Russia to fulfill its international obligations.

Latvia supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally-recognised borders and considers that discussion must be continued in the Geneva format of negotiations to find a long-term solution to the conflict.
