OSCE Group of Friends has released a statement in support of Georgia

8.12.2017, Vienna - OSCE Group of Friends of Georgia, uniting Canada, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, has released a statement supporting Georgia’s territorial integrity and democratic development at today’s OSCE Ministerial Council.

The Group of Friends reaffirms its full support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and express full support to the strong determination of Georgia, in its aspirations of European and Euro-Atlantic integration and commend the commitment shown by the Georgian authorities in this regard.

The Group of Friends congratulates Georgia on the successful conduction of 2017 local elections, with full respect for fundamental human rights and international commitments.

The Group expresses its support for the peaceful resolution of the conflict and pays special attention to the difficult humanitarian situation Georgia’s occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali. It also condemns mass destruction of houses in the village of Eredvi within the framework of Russian investment programs.

The Declaration reaffirms the need to achieve progress on the main issues on the agenda of the Geneva International Discussions, including on the non-use of force, creation of international security arrangements and right of IDPs and refugees to return to the places of their origin in safety and dignity. It is also important that the members of the Group urge the Russian Federation to reverse its recognition of Georgia’s occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) as independent states, the call upon Russia to withdraw its military forces and comply with its commitments including those under the 12 August 2008 ceasefire agreement mediated by the EU.
