Information on the Fifth Regional Economic Co-operation Conference on Afghanistan held in Dushanbe

 

The Fifth Regional Economic Co-operation Conference on Afghanistan (RECCA V) was held in the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe, on 26 and 27 March 2012. The Conference was attended by a Georgian delegation led by the Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr. Davit Jalaghania, which included representatives from the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development as well as representatives from the Georgian embassy in Uzbekistan.

The Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister delivered a speech during the Conference in which he focused on Georgia's contribution to the strengthening of security and stability in Afghanistan and in the region as a whole as well as on possible directions for co-operation towards the future development of Afghanistan. The Georgian delegation also gave a presentation on the "improvement of transport infrastructure as a focal point for the development of regional co-operation", in which they emphasized the importance of developing international transit corridors. The Conference unanimously adopted a joint declaration.

On the sidelines of the Conference, Mr. Jalaghania held meetings with the Afghan Foreign Minister, Mr. Zalmai Rassoul, and the First Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr. Jawed Ludin.

On 27 March at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, the delegation of the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a meeting with the First Deputy Foreign Minister of Tajikistan, Mr. Mahmud Sobirov, during which they discussed topical issues concerning bilateral and multilateral co-operation.
