Relations between Georgia and the Republic of Italy

Diplomatic relations with Italy were established on 11 May, 1992

Fields of Cooperation:

Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry of Development Programs:

Before 2005, according to the 77th resolution of the Development and Cooperation Division of Economic Planning Agency Italian side could provide financial support to Georgia by means of only humanitarian or projects funded by Non-Governmental Organizations.  Since December 2005, according to the 139th resolution Georgia become part of all the programmes, that are included in the 87th law (Law on Cooperation with Developing Counties) of Development and Cooperation Division.

After August 2008, Italy increased amount of financial support for Georgia.  On October 22, 2008, on the Conference of Donors Italy announced to distribute 1.6 million Euros for Georgia.  In addition to this, in 2008-2009 Italian financial support amounted approximately 3 million Euros.

Activities funded by the Development and Cooperation Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy are:

Bilateral and multilateral participation in emergency situations (delivery of food and first aid in cases of natural disasters and conflicts)

Assistance based on the 180th and 212th laws of 1992, managed by the General Division of European States of ministry of foreign affairs

Assistance for victims of August war in Georgia (IDPs)

Voluntary contributions for Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

Contribution to several international relations

Except these, some Italian central and local administrations function privately in Georgia.

Georgia is among those states, to which Italian government targets its development and cooperation policies.  Italy works in accordance with Georgian Government and International donors (Euro-commission, European Investment Bank) in order to plan national initiatives.  In addition to financial support from other states, assistance from abovementioned organizations constitute main source of international assistance.

Since March 10, 2010 till April 2010 Italian cooperation and development division operated with the embassy of Italy to Georgia, under the supervision of Mario Barberini, and several initiatives were launched to assist Georgian IDPs (August war) in frames of the AID 9194 Programme.

Parliamentary cooperation:

The Group of Friendship with Italy is set up and is functioning in the Parliament of Georgia. The group is headed by Mr. Irakli Kenchoshvili, MP, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on European Integration. 

Economic Cooperation:

First Georgian-Italian business-forum was held in Tbilisi on 29-30 November, 2004 and this was a good beginning for activating of bilateral economic cooperation. Later, on the occasion of the first official visit of the President of Georgia, Mr. Mikheil Saakashvili to Italy, the so called Country Presentation dedicated to Georgia and also the second business-forum were held (3-5 March, 2005). Afterwards, three more Georgian-Italian business-forums were held, while in November, 2008 in the framework of the international economic conference held in Rome another Country Presentation was organized, which was dedicated to the assessment of economic and investing possibilities in the region of South Caucasus, as well as in Georgia.

There is a solid legal base between Italy and Georgia, almost all economic agreements are signed.
