Chronology of Diplomatic Relations

Diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Republic of Latvia were established on March 11, 1993.

Since 1999, Zurab Marshania, Consul General of Georgia to Republics of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia was defending rights of Georgian citizens in Latvia.

In September 2003 Embassy of Georgia to the Republics of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia was opened (residence in Vilnius). Mr. David Aptsiauri was appointed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republics of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

On October 13, 2006 Embassy of Georgia to the Republic of Latvia was opened.

Embassy of the Republic of Latvia to Georgia was opened on May 31, 2006.

Fields of Cooperation

Latvia univocally supports Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty within Georgia's internationally recognized borders. Georgia and Latvia have developed close cooperation in number of fields of mutual interest. Latvia supports Georgia's European aspirations and expresses readiness to share its successful experience of Euro-Atlantic integration. Inter-parliamentary, cultural, defense and economic cooperation is intense and productive. Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Georgia conduct regular bilateral political consultations within the framework of Protocol on Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia signed in 2009.

Latvia and Georgia cooperate under the Development Cooperation Program, which implies implementation of joint projects in the following areas: migration, border management, education, institutional development, local government. In order to foster economic cooperation governments of Latvia and Georgia have established bilateral economic inter-governmental commission in 2009.
