Diplomatic Relations

Diplomatic relations with Georgia were established on September 19, 1992.

Fields of Cooperation

Sweden became a member of the New Group of Friends of Georgia at the ministerial meeting in 2007 in Vilnius.

In 2009 Sweden increased its assistance for active involvement of Georgia into Eastern Partnership Initiative.

During the Swedish EU Presidency (1 July, 2009 - 31 December, 2009) Sweden continued its support to Georgia on the following issues: EU-Georgia agreement on Visa Facilitation, Association Agreement with Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade component.

Development Cooperation Assistance rendered by the Swedish Government through the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) is very important for Georgia.

Among the EU countries, Sweden is one of the most important donors for Georgia.

On 21 January, 2010 the Government of Sweden adopted a New Strategy for Development Cooperation with Georgia for the period 2010-2013. It is intended to increase Swedish development cooperation with Georgia to approximately SEK 100 million per year.

The Swedish International Development Agency's (SIDA) projects in Georgia are focused on the following spheres: 1. Democracy, Human Rights and Gender Equality; 2. Environment; 3. Market Development.

With a view of boosting of bilateral interparliamentary cooperation, the all party group on Sweden was established in the Georgian Parliament led by the Vice-speaker of the Georgian Parliament Mrs. Rusudan Kervalishvili. Parliamentary Friendship group on Georgia was functioning in the Swedish parliament before 19 September, 2010 Parliamentary Elections in Sweden.

On 20 March, 2012 Parliamentary friendship group on Georgia was inaugurated in the Swedish parliament. The group chairman is Jessica Polfjärd. 

Sweden is the largest contributor to the EU Monitoring Mission to Georgia (36 Swedish monitors).

Agreement between the Government of Georgia and the Government of Sweden on the Establishment of Swedish Development Coordination Office in the South Caucasus.  (Signed in Tbilisi on March 5, 2004, entered into force on 15.11.2005);

Agreement between Georgia and Sweden on General Terms and Conditions for Development Cooperation (Signed in Tbilisi on December 13, 2006, entered into force on March 15, 2007);

Agreement between the Government of Georgia and the Government of Sweden on Reciprocal Promotion and Protection of Investments (signed in Stockholm on 30 October, 2008, entered into force on 01 April, 2009);

Agreements between Georgia and Sweden on Development Cooperation for 2010-2013 (Signed and entered into force on 14.12.2010).
