On November 17, 2023, the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Lasha Darsalia, met with the Head of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia, Dimitrios Karabalis.
The dire security, human rights and humanitarian situation in Georgia’s occupied regions caused by Russia’s illegal actions was discussed at the meeting. Deep concern was expressed over the murder of a peaceful Georgian citizen Tamaz Ginturi by the Russian occupation forces in the vicinity of the village Kirbali on November 6, which represents a grave consequence of the Russian occupation and once again confirms the importance of fulfilment of the EU-mediated 12 August 2008 Ceasefire Agreement by Russia.
The parties discussed the necessity of a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Georgia conflict and the importance of Geneva International Discussions in this process. The importance of restoration of Gali Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism without delay and preconditions was emphasized.
The role and the significance of the EU Monitoring Mission was underlined with regard to monitoring the violation of the EU-mediated 12 August 2008 Ceasefire Agreement by Russia and preventing the escalation of the situation on the ground. The Georgian side expressed gratitude for the efforts of the EUMM in the process of peaceful resolution of the Russia-Georgia conflict.
At the end of the meeting, the parties confirmed their willingness to continue close cooperation.
