Within the framework of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Ilia Darchiashvili, held a meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk.
At the meeting, the sides welcomed Georgia's membership in the UN Human Rights Council for the period of 2023-2025 and emphasized Georgia’s valuable contribution towards fulfilling the main principles of the Council. Also, they positively evaluated Georgia’s membership priorities, including the protection of the rights of women, children, people with disabilities, ethnic minorities and internally displaced persons, the environmental dimensions of human rights, others.
Discussions also focused on the difficult human rights situation in the occupied regions of Georgia and the important role of the UN High Commissioner in terms of keeping this issue high on the international agenda.
The sides highlighted the great importance of the annual resolution "Cooperation with Georgia" adopted by the Human Rights Council, which draws special attention to the difficult human rights situation in the occupied regions. High appraisal was given to Georgia’s adoption of the State Strategy in Human Rights. The Minister expressed his readiness to host the High Commissioner in Georgia.
